Vow Nutrition may be one of the lesser known players in the sports supplements market but with its vegan protein bars it’s heading in the right direction.

You may not have heard of Vow Nutrition. It’s not a name that’s up there with the likes of Grenade, Healthspan, SiS or PhD – yet. But that looks likely to change come the Paris 2024 Olympics, when Vow will be the official nutrition product provider for Team GB. But is that enough to earn its bars a place on our best protein bars list?

Men’s Fitness verdict

Vow only makes three flavours, but why make more when they taste this good? Taste and texture are both spot-on and sugar content is minimal. It’s just a shame it doesn’t hit the 20g protein mark.
Pros
  • Pleasant chewy texture
  • Low in sugar
Cons
  • Relatively high in polyols
  • Only 16g protein

How we test the best protein bars

Registered nutritionist (AFN) and sports nutritionist (SENr) Rob Hobson only tested chocolate-flavoured bars to provide consistency in his reviews. He judged them on their taste, texture and nutritional effectiveness, as well as cost and availability, and the amount of polyols – a type of sweetener which can upset the gut in high amounts.

Vow Nutrition Protein Bar benefits

It’s no surprise that these Vow Nutrition Protein Bars (buy now) are Informed Sport approved and so suitable for elite competition. Vox is Team GB’s official nutrition product provider at this summer’s Olympic Games, after all. That’s a sign that its ingredients – particularly protein – come from good quality sources.

Vox uses a blend of soya protein isolate and whey protein isolate. Each 45g bar has 16g of protein, which is a decent amount, but not quite hitting the 20g mark that’s optimal for taking care of your post-workout recovery needs.

If you’re wondering whether protein bars are healthy, this bar is low in sugar with just 0.4g. It contains 13g of polyols, which is relatively high, so stick to just one bar, as it can act as a laxative in higher quantities.

They are plant-based though, so also make it into our pick of the best vegan protein bars.

Flavour and texture

These Vow bars come in three flavours: peanut crunch, salted caramel and cookies and cream. Each flavor is instantly recognizable (that’s not always the case) and the peanut crunch does have a satisfying bite to it. The flavors are pleasant, not overly sweet or with a bitter aftertaste from it’s artificial maltitol sweetener.

The texture is really good too, finding a sweet spot between soft and chewy, with a slightly crunchy vegan chocolate coating. Overall it’s one of the more pleasant tasting protein bars I’ve tasted. It’s just a shame that the protein levels are a little low and polyol levels a little high.
