With one in ten Brits struggling to maintain focus since the pandemic Pro Plus ® can help increase alertness and concentration…

Brits are struggling to maintain concentration since pandemic, with two in five (41%) reporting that they are finding it more difficult to maintain their ability to concentrate since the pandemic, reveals new research from energy and focus brand Pro Plus ®.

Lockdown may be a distant memory, but it seems to have made it a challenge to stay focused. Many adults say they are unable to keep their attention on a single task and this is significantly impacting their work and home life.

This phenomenon is not something that has gone unnoticed by our bosses, with more than 1 in 10 (13%) people reporting they have been reprimanded for it. This number increases to 1 in 5 (21%) adults whose family members have commented on their lack of focus.

Commenting on the deprivation of focus, neuroscientist and author of Sort Your Brain Out, Dr Jack Lewis PhD says:

“Today’s world is full of distractions and it’s never been more important to stay focused. Undoubtedly, our growing dependence on technology has made maintaining our attention spans a challenge, but the past few years have also had a subtle yet significant effect.

“According to a survey conducted by Pro Plus ®, 32% of people report the importance of sleep in maintaining focus, but adequate mental stimulation (20%), a noise free environment (16%) and eating properly (15%) are also factors. Sustaining focus can, in fact, be a skill, so understanding what affects you personally can help you overcome the obstacles in concentration. Try taking note of what you’re feeling or what is going on around you when you tend to lose focus to help you find your triggers.”

Dr Lewis suggests 3 key strategies for remaining focused

1. Movement

“Move your body regularly. Exercise releases a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which supports nerve cell growth – something that’s key to improving your ability to concentrate, as well as memorise and learn. This exercise can be anything that increases your heart rate, so find a way of movement that you enjoy and can sustain long-term.”

2. Sleep

“Aim for between seven to nine hours of sleep per night. During sleep, the brain consolidates memories and processes information, which can improve cognitive performance the next day. Additionally, getting enough sleep is required for the normal activity in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region important for attention and decision-making, which are intrinsic to maintaining focus and concentration.”

3. Routine

“Create a daily routine to avoid decision fatigue. Our brains thrive on structure, so removing small and unnecessary decisions every day allows your mind to channel its attention into the important things.”
