The almost weightless feel of On’s Lightweight Shorts is particularly noticeable running over longer distances or on mixed terrain.

At only 150g this featherweight pair of the best running shorts from On Running are, as the name suggests, ultra light – with a perforated back to allow airflow and breathability. Although the inner lining and outer of the shorts are incredibly thin, their quality is immediately obvious. The material is soft and stretchy but feels comfortable and reassuringly robust.

Men’s Fitness verdict

Second only to Satisfy’s shorts in terms of weight, On’s shorts are featherweight and ultra-breathable. Despite that barely-there feel, quality is impressive and they don’t skimp on comfort either.

On Lightweight Shorts design

These Lightweight Shorts from On Running are, as the name suggests, ultra light – with a perforated back to allow airflow and breathability.

Although the inner lining and outer of the shorts are incredibly thin, their quality is immediately obvious. The material is soft and stretchy but feels comfortable and reassuringly robust.

On Running’s shorts offer an athletic fit, which strikes the right balance between being fitted and allowing freedom of movement.

And while chafing is a big issue with some shorts out there, on a short-distance run we had no problems with the built-in inner lining.

On Lightweight Shorts performance

Their almost weightless feel is particularly noticeable when out running over longer distances or on mixed terrain. And that light weight also comes into its own in hot or humid conditions.

Although the shorts don’t have a typical drawstring fastening, the pull loop inside the waistband guarantees a secure and comfortable fit.

There’s a rear pocket big enough for a phone and a small key loop inside the pocket. There is no zip, just an elasticated fabric fold on the pocket, but it held items securely enough, even when sprinting. The pocket is in a slightly unusual location, however: high up near the waistband and central on the back of the shorts.

On Running’s shorts don’t have any hard or sharp points – zips, buttons etc – making them suitable for floor work, too.
