How we test the best running shorts

Our reviewers tested each pair of running shorts over a wide range of distances – from 5km to half-marathon – and during treadmill and outdoor training sessions as well as competitive events, to bring you the best of the best.

Satisfy Ripper 3-Inch Trail Short design

The Ripper’s outer shorts are made from lightweight, durable ripstop fabric, while the liners are more like those you’ll find on hybrid or trail shorts. They use a thin, soft fabric that keeps the weight down. That works in tandem with overlapping side splits to deliver the flexibility and race feel of short shorts but the confidence that you won’t accidentally show off more than your lap times.

Satisfy has seriously taken care of storage, too, with an impressive array of four pockets. That includes three external rear options – two hooded drop-ins and one zippered – and a rear internal sweatproof phone pocket.

Satisfy Ripper 3-Inch Trail Short features

The easy-access hooded hip pockets can hold up to six gels and have inner mesh separators for stowage options. The zippered pocket will also swallow a larger smartphone and hold it without too much bounce. That pocket also has two separated inner key compartments to prevent irritating jangling.

The cut and comfort is also top notch. There’s a classic drawstring waistband, so you can flex the fit easily, while an internal band that’s wider and flatter than the main cinched waistband sits against the skin with no cutting in or rolling up, removing any unwanted pressure.

The ripstop outer and lightweight liner manages moisture well and dry quickly. You won’t lose that fast and minimal race feel, no matter how wet the weather.

The Satisfy Rippy comes in two seasonal colours – we loved last season’s brave leopard print that was almost as bold as the price – as well as black. It’s also available in five sizes from XS to XL.
