How we tested the best adjustable dumbbells

Our tester David Thomas is an experienced product reviewer of all manner of fitness kit. He tested this adjustable dumbbell at various weights and through a range of exercises at high rep ranges to see how it handles, assessing it in terms of grip, comfort, and weight range. He then provided an overall score, taking build quality, performance and price into consideration.

BodyMax V2.0 25kg Selectabell 15-in-1 Single Dumbbell features

This dumbbell is a thing of beauty. It has one of the slickest designs I tested and is simple to get to grips with for a range of dumbbell exercises.

The weight range goes from 9.9lb to 55lb / 4.5kg to 25kg in 15 increments, making it hugely versatile. As with all adjustable dumbbells, the compact design reduces the need for a stack of dumbbells so you can save a lot of space.

Using the BodyMax V2.0 25kg Selectabell

The single dumbbell, docking station and 10 weight plates come with instructions to get you started. (The design is simple and intuitive, though, so you probably won’t need them.)

To adjust the BodyMax 25kg adjustable dumbbell, you simply have to lift the selector pin and move it to the weight you want to use. Then, click back into place and lift – it’s that simple. I also found that the plates themselves were sturdy and didn’t rattle around, even during this high-intensity 15-minute dumbbell workout.

The markings on the base unit identify what weights can be selected, so you can quickly choose the resistance you want. Plus, the base is also compatible with the Selectabell Stand V2.0

If I had one minor gripe, it’s that the knurled grip on the handles are not as comfortable as some other adjustable dumbbells I tested. If you’re a beginner (with soft hands not used to lifting weights) and are going to be using these often, I’d recommend using some lifting chalk or gloves.
